TV Mounting: What Actually Holds, and What Comes Off the Wall

A modern 65-inch TV weighs 50 to 70 pounds, and a full-motion arm can multiply the leverage on the wall by three or four times when it is extended. That is a real structural load, and it is why televisions still end up on living-room floors every year.

Drywall alone will not hold a TV. Not with toggle bolts, not with the plastic anchors in the box, not with the heavy-duty ones. Drywall is half an inch of gypsum paper — it is a surface, not a structure. Any mount worth trusting is lagged into wood studs or into solid masonry.

Studs are usually 16 inches apart on center, which conveniently matches most mount bolt patterns. A stud finder gets you close, but confirming with a small finish nail or by checking outlet box placement is what confirms it. Catching the edge of a stud instead of its center is a common and dangerous mistake — it feels solid on installation day and pulls out months later.

Brick, stone, and tile need different hardware entirely: masonry sleeve anchors set into the solid material, not into mortar joints, and a hammer drill to get there. Tile has to be drilled slowly with the right bit or it cracks. This is where most DIY mounting attempts go wrong.

Then there is the wiring. Running power cable inside a wall is not legal or safe unless it is in-wall rated cable with proper recessed boxes. The correct approach is a recessed outlet behind the TV, an in-wall rated power kit, or a paintable surface raceway. HDMI and low-voltage cable can be run in the wall, but it should be done through the stud bay cleanly, not stuffed in and hoped for.

Get the height right before anything is drilled. The center of the screen should sit roughly at eye level from where you actually sit. Mounting above a fireplace looks dramatic in photos and is uncomfortable to watch for two hours — and the heat is not good for the electronics either.
